Full time, continuing position to commence in March 2022.

The Department of Philosophy in the School of Humanities at the University of Adelaide seeks to appoint an outstanding researcher and teacher as the next Hughes Professor of Philosophy.

We are open to any area of specialisation although Ethics is an area of preference. We are particularly interested in candidates whose teaching and research complements existing areas of strength in the department.

The department especially encourages applications from members of groups historically under-represented in philosophy.

The Hughes Professor in Mental and Moral Philosophy was one of two foundation chairs at the University of Adelaide and has had many distinguished occupants since it was established in 1874. The Department of Philosophy has a history of excellence in research and teaching since that time. Research in philosophy at the University has achieved an ERA evaluation rating at level 5 (well above international standard) in the two most recent ERA evaluations, and we have a strong track record of success in attracting external research funding. We have a vibrant community of postgraduate students and we also pride ourselves on the quality of our undergraduate subject offerings.

To be successful you will need:

  • A PhD in Philosophy.
  • A significant international reputation in philosophy research.
  • An excellent publication record in high quality outlets.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching philosophy coursework at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • A history of success in competitive external grant funding applications.
