Job Summary: The Notre Dame Technology Ethics Center (ND-TEC) and ND-IBM Technology Ethics Lab (the Lab) are seeking applicants for technology ethics postdoctoral fellowships from eligible graduate students or recent graduates. The appointment will be for a minimum appointment period of July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023.  Fellows can apply for a one-time, one-year renewal.  Our goal is to hire 2-3 postdoctoral fellows.

ND-TEC/the Lab are interdisciplinary units with affiliated faculty and students from across our community. As such, this position is open to applicants from a broad range of disciplines and backgrounds. We invite applications from doctoral students and recent graduates across disciplines who are writing dissertations on or are engaged in major research on topics related to technology ethics, broadly construed.  Disciplines could include philosophy, engineering, data science, information studies, business, sociology, anthropology, history, law, critical studies, etc.

The postdoctoral fellows are appointed within ND TEC and funded by the ND-IBM Technology Ethics Lab.

Appointment: This appointment is tentatively expected to run for one calendar year.  Fellows can apply for a one-time, one-year renewal. The postdoctoral fellow will receive an annual stipend of $60,000/12 months.  Fellows are expected to be in residence at the University of Notre Dame during the academic year.

Full Job Description: Tech Ethics Fellows are expected to teach one undergraduate seminar related to Technology Ethics each semester, devote time to a course of research associated with Technology Ethics, participate in the ND TEC’s weekly seminar series, and contribute to the Lab.  Fellows for this incoming program will be responsible for the following goals:

Teaching
Fellows of this cohort will teach one undergraduate seminar each semester for the Technology Ethics minor. The theme or scope of the course will be worked out with the ND TEC director.  The same seminar can be taught both semesters.

Research
Fellows of this cohort will spend the majority of their time conducting independent research on a topic within technology ethics that will lead to a significant scholarly publication or publications. Fellows are encouraged to participate in the intellectual life of the University, and make use of its resources.

Service
Fellows will be expected to participate in ND TEC’s academic events, seminars, workshops and participate in the biweekly ND TEC Graduate Student and Postdoc Affiliates seminar. Fellows have a defined contribution to the Lab to be worked out with the Lab Director.  The contribution can be written, speaking, hosting an event, etc. and defined so that the contribution builds on the fellow’s scholarship and is within the scope of the Lab’s mission.

Qualifications: Students should be currently (a) enrolled in either a doctoral program or in a graduate program that leads to a terminal degree in that field (e.g. law or medicine); or (b) a recent graduate of such a program (within two years).
