Job description

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Florida, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, invites applications for a nine-month, non-tenure-accruing, time-limited appointment in Philosophy at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor, beginning August 16, 2022. We invite applicants with specializations in Non-Western Philosophy and/or Philosophy of Race. The position is designed to temporarily meet the needs of the department in the wake of a faculty retirement. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Philosophy completed prior to August 16, 2022. The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience and includes a full benefits package. To apply, visit https://jobs.ufl.edu/ search for job 519963.

The successful candidate will have significant expertise in Non-Western Philosophy and/or Philosophy of Race and be expected to teach some courses in one or more of those areas, possibly including graduate as well as undergraduate courses. These will be part of the six courses assigned over the academic year, three for each semester. Other course assignments will be a function of departmental teaching needs as well as the research and teaching interests of the candidate. A record of effective teaching that engages a wide variety of students is an advantage.

The successful candidate will also contribute to the life of the department by participating in colloquia, conferences, and other community events. This may include sharing their own research in progress with faculty at in-house departmental talks. A modest service assignment that allows time for the candidate to pursue their own research is expected.

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Florida is a supportive community of philosophers committed to significant research, high-quality teaching at all levels, and service to the greater community, including work with other academic units and agencies outside the university with respect to applied ethics, especially pertaining to technological innovations and artificial intelligence. Our faculty are engaged in innovative teaching through the university's distinctive "Quest" program (http://undergrad.aa.ufl.edu/uf-quest/), are fortunate to enjoy an exceptionally robust body of undergraduate majors and minors, and support each other's research through regular working groups on various areas. Applicants are encouraged to visit the departmental website (https://phil.ufl.edu/) to learn more.

The Department of Philosophy particularly welcomes applicants who can contribute to a diverse and inclusive environment through their scholarship, teaching, mentoring, and professional service. Please see https://diversity.clas.ufl.edu/diversity-statement/ for more information about diversity and inclusion in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and https://phil.ufl.edu/diversity-and-inclusion/ for more information about diversity and inclusion at the departmental level. The university and greater Gainesville communities enjoy a diversity of cultural events, restaurants, year-round outdoor recreational activities, and social opportunities. Members of underrepresented groups such as women and people of color are especially encouraged to apply.
