Job Summary:

The Philosophy department at UFV is a small but active department that offers a wide range of courses and programs. In addition to a comprehensive range of courses in the History of Philosophy that covers both the Analytic and the Continental traditions, we offer a range of courses in Applied Ethics, Comparative philosophies, and more. We offer our students a Minor, Major and Honours in Philosophy, as well as an option for an Extended Minor and an Applied Ethical and Political Philosophy Minor.

We are currently inviting applications for a full-time, tenure-track position. The area of specialization is contemporary metaphysics, with an emphasis on philosophy of mind. The candidate is expected to teach the following courses:

  • PHIL100 Reasoning: An Introduction to Critical Thinking
  • PHIL120 Knowledge and Reality
  • PHIL300 Symbolic Logic in Context
  • PHIL322 Philosophy of Mind

The ability to teach philosophy of language, or philosophy of science will be considered an asset. The successful candidate will have completed, or be near completion of, a PhD in Philosophy with an established portfolio of research in one or more of the above areas.

As a primarily teaching-oriented institution and department, we are seeking a collegial, energetic, and innovative individual who has successful teaching experience at the undergraduate level and who communicates effectively with students both in and out of the classroom; is qualified to instruct across a range of the undergraduate courses offered by the department; and can develop new and innovative courses. Experience with incorporating indigenous perspectives will be central, as well as teaching international students, and managing the needs of a diverse classroom environment will be considered a strong asset. Likewise, we are committed to supporting and engaging international students and the diverse classroom population at UFV.

The successful candidate will show aptitude for working in team situations; demonstrated ability to participate in innovative inter-disciplinary teaching; a collaborative approach to engaging in department business; and an active commitment to academic service.

In addition to mentoring students from diverse backgrounds and to fostering a vibrant environment within our philosophy programs and our broader community, the successful candidate will also be expected to maintain a program of scholarly activity or research, preferably one which involves students, is related to the areas set out in the description above, and/or is community-linked. It is expected that all faculty members shall engage in an on-going process of professional development.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate must possess a PhD in Philosophy (or imminent completion, by Sept 1st), with a specialization in contemporary metaphysics, (preference given to candidates with a background in philosophy of mind); evidence of successful teaching experience; and an on-going program of research.
