Job description

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Guelph invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level.

The Department of Philosophy is home to 17 faculty who teach and research in a wide range of specializations: Feminist Philosophy; the Philosophy of Science and Medicine; Ethics, Social, and Political Philosophy; the History of Philosophy; and the Philosophy of Mind and Language, Epistemology & Metaphysics. The department offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Philosophy, a Master of Arts (MA) in Philosophy, and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Philosophy.

Responsibilities of this position will include teaching and service for the new Sexualities, Genders, and Social Change (SXGN) program in the College of Arts (https://www.uoguelph.ca/arts/sxgn). While based in the Philosophy Department, the successful applicant will be expected to contribute 50% of teaching and service to the SXGN program. Teaching load is 2-2. The preferred candidate will have a specialization in Philosophy of Gender and Sexuality; research in race and/or disability studies and/or queer theory within the following subfields of Philosophy are especially welcome: Ethics, History of Philosophy, Philosophy of Science, Social and Political Philosophy. The successful candidate will teach the large, first-year lecture course SXGN*1010: Sexualities, Genders, Race, and Indigeneity as well as our medium-sized, upper-level seminar SXGN*3000: Social Change: Acts of Resistance. Other teaching includes Philosophy’s newly redesigned upper-level courses in feminist philosophy (at 3rd and 4th year and graduate levels), as well as existing courses in social and political philosophy, ethics, philosophy of science, and history of philosophy, depending on expertise.

Required Qualifications: Candidates must hold a PhD in Philosophy or a related field by the appointment date (July 1, 2022). In addition, the successful candidate must present evidence of a program of established scholarly research in the area of specialization, successful teaching at the university level, and the ability to supervise undergraduate and graduate students.
