DESCRIPTION

Otterbein University, a comprehensive liberal arts institution, invites applications for the position of One Year Visiting Assistant Professor of Philosophy & Religion beginning August 2022.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching load is 4 - 4 which includes teaching courses in Ethics, Applied Ethics, and Philosophy of Art. Many of these courses are cross-listed in Otterbein’s Integrative Studies program (the core of our general education requirements). There is also an opportunity to teach a seminar on a topic of the instructor’s choosing—one that will be interesting to Philosophy and Religion majors as well as students outside the department. Beyond successful teaching, the occupant of this position will have departmental service responsibilities including recruitment and outreach.

[This isn't in the job ad on the Otterbein website, but the teaching load would be 8 courses, but 4 or 5 preps]

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

To be hired, a Ph.D. in a relevant field of study by the start of appointment is required. Demonstrated evidence of success teaching undergraduates is required. Area of Specialization: Open. Area of Competence: Ethics, Applied Ethics, and Philosophy of Art.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

WHEN:  This appointment is for the 2022-23 academic year and will begin August 2022.

DEPARTMENT:  The Department is composed of two full-time and two part-time faculty. One of the full-time faculty is trained in philosophy, the second in religious studies. This visiting position would fill the slot of a departing faculty member in philosophy. The Department services one major in Philosophy and Religion and two minors (one in Religion, and one in Philosophy). The bulk of our teaching is to general education students (through the Integrative Studies Program) but we also are connected to the Legal Studies Minor, the Sustainability Studies Major, the Art and Art History Major, the Honors Program, and the minor in Race and Ethnic Studies.

APPLICATION: Otterbein seeks candidates interested in teaching our diverse and talented student populations. To apply, submit a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, three references (who will be prompted to upload a letter of recommendation), and a teaching portfolio (including a teaching statement, areas of teaching interest, syllabi and teaching evaluations). As to syllabi, please include syllabi for an ethical theory course, a contemporary moral problems course, and a course in philosophy of art. Additionally, a diversity statement is also required, consisting of no more than one single-spaced page, addressing the following two questions: How has a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion informed your teaching, scholarship, and/or professional experience to date? How do you see yourself contributing to Otterbein’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion? Application materials should be received by March 30, 2022.

Otterbein considers diversity and inclusion as integral parts of the University’s achievement of excellence. Women, members of groups that have been historically under-represented in higher education, and individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Otterbein University is an EEO Employer.
