Job description

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Richmond invites applications for a full-time, one-year visiting assistant professor position in Philosophy and PPEL (Philosophy, Politics, Economics, and Law) to begin August 2022. The areas of specialization are Political Philosophy or Applied Ethics; the area of concentration is open. We seek candidates with demonstrated teaching excellence and a strong commitment to high quality undergraduate education. The teaching load is six courses per year: two sections of Environmental Ethics, two sections of Introduction to Philosophy, and two sections of the Seminar in Theory and Public Policy, a gateway course for the Philosophy, Politics, Economics, and Law (PPEL) major. PhD is expected prior to appointment. This is a non-tenure track appointment.

The University of Richmond is a private university located just a short drive from downtown Richmond, Virginia. Through its five schools and wide array of campus programming, the University combines the best qualities of a small liberal arts college and a large university. With nearly 4,000 students, an 8:1 student-faculty ratio, and 92% of traditional undergraduate students living on campus, the University is remarkably student-centered, focused on preparing students “to live lives of purpose, thoughtful inquiry, and responsible leadership in a global and pluralistic society.”

The University of Richmond is committed to developing a diverse workforce and student body, and to modeling an inclusive campus community which values the expression of difference in ways that promote excellence in teaching, learning, personal development, and institutional success. Our academic community strongly encourages applications that are in keeping with this commitment. For more information on the department of Philosophy and the PPEL Program, please visit their respective websites at http://philosophy.richmond.edu and https://ppel.richmond.edu/.

Applicants should apply online at http://jobs.richmond.edu and submit the following materials: a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a statement of research interests and goals; and a teaching statement. The teaching statement should articulate the candidate’s teaching philosophy, interests, and future professional development goals as well as involvement in and commitment to inclusive pedagogy. Candidates for this position may be asked, at a later date, to provide the names and contact information for three references who will be asked to submit letters of recommendation. Review of applications will commence on March 14, 2022 and continue until the position is filled. Questions about the position should be addressed to the Chair of the Search Committee, David Lefkowitz, [email protected].
