Job description

Five postdoc positions in philosophy of mind (one for two years, the rest for one year), Centre for Philosophical Psychology, University of Antwerp.

The main criteria for all these positions are academic excellence as well as compatibility with Professor Nanay’s research and approach.  The postdocs will be part of Bence Nanay’s ERC-funded project as well as his larger research group (funded by ERC, FWO, FP7 CIG and BOF UA) and will work closely with Professor Nanay. So candidates are encouraged to familiarize themselves with his work before applying. The pay is (for US and UK standards) very generous. Postdoctoral researchers and PhD students in Belgium are public employees with very generous benefits. Professor Nanay’s research group has about eight postdocs and three PhD students at the moment.

For all of these positions, background in the empirical sciences is an advantage. Candidates may email [email protected] if they have doubts about whether their profile matches this call. Candidates must have a PhD degree in philosophy (PhD has to be officially awarded before the starting date, which is in September 2022). There are no teaching obligations.

Most (not all) of these positions, unlike some previous ones advertised, is on a very specific topic funded by the recently awarded ERC project on mental imagery and multimodal perception (more info on the project here: https://bencenanay.com/ERC.htm and on the general topic here: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0010945217302277#:~:text=Multimodal%20mental%20imagery%20is%20normally,in%20the%20relevant%20sense%20modality. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to work on joint projects with Professor Nanay that are related to this topic.

Some positions are more open - the only constraint is that the candidate’s research project should be a good match with Professor Nanay’s current interests.

Note that these positions are different from the joint Antwerp/Geneva postdocs advertised earlier on the topic of emotion and imagery. But suitable candidates are welcome to apply for both.

Instructions
In the light of recent findings on implicit bias, the candidates are asked to send their application material fully anonymized: Please send an anonymized cv, an anonymized max 5000 word writing sample and an anonymized max 2–page outline of the fit between the candidate’s research and that of Professor Nanay’s (as well as potential joint projects/papers) to [email protected] and have two letters of reference (which obviously shouldn't be anonymized) sent to the same email address (interfolio is ok for these). Please write ‘Postdoc: Mind’ in the subject line. Deadline: April 15, 2022
