Job description

The University of St Andrews invites applications for a 24-month Gifford Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Department of Philosophy, within the School of Philosophical, Anthropological and Film Studies. The fellowship will commence on 1st September 2022.

The fellow’s primary responsibility is to pursue their research agenda and to publish high quality research. Secondary responsibilities include contributing to teaching and assisting with administrative responsibilities within philosophy.

The research carried out by the Fellow will fall broadly within the area of Lord Gifford’s bequest, namely natural theology understood as a discipline based on the observation of nature and the use of reason.  Scholars with specializations in a comprehensive range of areas of philosophy, from mainstream epistemology to metaphysics, moral philosophy and the history of philosophy, are welcome to apply provided their research aligns with the goals of Lord Gifford's Trust. The successful candidate will carry out cutting edge research work and contribute to the teaching of philosophy in undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Further details of the the terms of Lord Gifford’s bequest will be found within the further particulars.

Prospective candidates are invited to contact the Head of Department, Dr Simon Prosser ([email protected]), or Dr Mara van der Lugt ([email protected]), if they wish to enquire informally about the position.

Qualifications: Applicants must hold a PhD in philosophy, or have submitted their PhD by the time of the application closing date. The successful candidate will have potential for world-class research and a clearly-defined research agenda that is both ambitious and achievable. Ideally, the candidate’s project and interests will complement existing strengths in the philosophy department.

The Department of Philosophy is committed to providing an open, equitable, and inclusive work environment, which is free from bullying and harassment and welcoming to all.  We welcome applications from members of groups who are under-represented in academic philosophy and/or at the University of St Andrews, including but not limited to women, members of racialised minority groups, persons with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. The School of Philosophical, Anthropological and Film Studies has received the Athena Swan bronze award.

Applications are particularly welcome from women  people from the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community, and other protected characteristics who are under-represented in professional posts at the University.

Equality, diversity and inclusion are at the heart of the St Andrews experience.  We strive to create a fair and inclusive culture demonstrated through our commitment to diversity awards (Athena Swan, Carer Positive, LGBT Charter, Race Charters and Stonewall). We celebrate diversity by promoting profiles of BAME, LGBTIQ+ staff and supporting networks including the Staff BAME Network; Staff with Disabilities Network; Staff LGBTIQ+ Network; and the Staff Parents & Carers Network.  Full details available online: https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/hr/edi/
