Job description

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral associate position in the philosophy of physics at the University of Pittsburgh, affiliated to the Department of History and Philosophy of Science and the Department of Philosophy. The position will be supervised by David Wallace, and applicants should intend to pursue a course of research in an area of philosophy of physics related to Professor Wallace’s research activities (which include inter alia the interpretation of quantum mechanics, the role of symmetry in physics, quantum field theory, statistical mechanics and thermodynamics, and quantum gravity). The postdoctoral associate may be asked to carry out some minor administrative work to assist Professor Wallace’s research, amounting to at most 10% of their time-averaged over the period of appointment; the remainder of their time is available for their own research project.

The position is for two years, to begin at an agreed-upon date in or around August 2022. The salary for year 1 is $50,000 plus benefits; there is an additional research allowance of $2,000 per year. The postdoctoral associate will be expected to relocate to Pittsburgh, though in light of the COVID-19 pandemic it may be permissible to delay this slightly. It is hoped that the postdoctoral associate will be provided with office space in the Philosophy or HPS departments, but this, unfortunately, cannot be guaranteed.

Interested applicants should send their academic CV, a statement of their planned research (1-2 pages), the names and contact information of two referees, and a writing sample of c.10,000 words. (If the writing sample is on a public archive like arxiv.org or philsci-archive, or on the candidate’s own website, a URL will suffice.) Applicants should have received a Ph.D. in a relevant subject (normally Philosophy or Physics), by the start of their appointment. Preference will be given to candidates who have received the PhD no later than the summer of 2016.
