Job description |
The University of Glasgow is seeking to appoint TWO lecturers in applied ethics. These are permanent research and teaching positions, roughly equivalent to assistant professor in North America. The successful candidates will be team-players with developing research profiles in applied ethics and capable of making a strong contribution to teaching and supervision at all levels. Areas in which suitable candidates might specialise include but are not limited to: biomedical ethics; neuroethics; human enhancement; intergenerational ethics; ethics of global healthcare; ethics of technology (VR, AR, AI); environmental ethics; race and reparations; legal ethics. Expertise in ethical theory or metaethics is also desired. Philosophy has an illustrious history at Glasgow, where it has been taught since 1451 by such luminaries as Francis Hutcheson, Thomas Reid, and Adam Smith. Soon to have 23 permanent staff, ours is a vibrant department. Our taught programmes cover all levels, including extremely popular pre-honours courses, two large honours years, and three separate MScs, including one for students with no philosophical background. Our research and teaching cover the full breadth of the discipline. The University offers excellent support for research and public engagement activity, and it allocates time for lecturers to complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education Practice. Glasgow’s Early Career Development Programme provides one-to-one mentoring to help staff achieve timely promotion. This post is on a full time (35 hrs per week), open ended basis. Start date: 1 September 2022, potentially later subject to negotiation. |
