Job description

Rice University’s Department of Philosophy seeks to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor with a specialization in the history of modern philosophy. Ideally, candidates should have an additional competence in one or more of the following areas: political philosophy, the history of political thought, or feminist or decolonizing approaches to the history of philosophy.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses and continue research in their area of expertise. Rice University has a semester-based teaching schedule with a 2-2 teaching load. Opportunities for interdisciplinary research projects and innovative teaching within and beyond Rice’s School of Humanities are plentiful and a high priority. Candidates that are able to demonstrate the inclusion of historically underrepresented perspectives and who bring an additional international and/or cross-cultural perspective to philosophy are especially encouraged to apply.

Rice University is a comprehensive and highly selective private research university consistently ranked among the top 20 universities in the U.S. The university is strongly committed to an intellectually and culturally diverse community, and the Department of Philosophy sees itself as vital to the mission of Rice’s School of Humanities.

Rice University is located in Houston, the fourth largest city in the U.S., which is also the most diverse metropolitan area in the nation. Houston is home to several universities, the nation’s leading medical center, a flourishing arts and theater scene, world class museums, an opera and a symphony.

Rice’s Department of Philosophy offers BA and PhD programs with a particularly strong and widely recognized research reputation in ethics and philosophy of mind. The department has close working relationships with other departments in the School of Humanities and it is also involved in a range of interdisciplinary programs, including Politics, Law & Social Thought, the Center for the Study of Women, Gender & Sexuality, Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, and Medical Humanities.

General information about the department can be found at philosophy.rice.edu. Questions about the position may be addressed to the department chair, Christian J. Emden ([email protected]), and the chair of the search committee, Elizabeth Brake ([email protected]).

The deadline for applications is November 14, 2022. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Philosophy or related field by July 1, 2023. Application materials must include a letter of application, CV, teaching statement, research statement, three letters of recommendation, and a writing sample of not more than 50 pages. The teaching and research statements should highlight the candidate’s ability to address cross-cultural, underrepresented, and/or international perspectives in their work. Applications must be submitted online at http://apply.interfolio.com/111993.
