Job description

The Boston University Department of Philosophy invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Philosophy of Science combined with Applied Ethics. Possible combinations could include: philosophy of neuroscience and the ethics of AI, philosophy of biology and medical ethics, philosophy of physics and environmental ethics or data ethics. Teaching experience and Ph.D. prior to appointment are expected.  Teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels; 2/2 load on the semester system; Ph.D. direction is expected, and normal committee work is required.  Summer teaching is available.  Salary commensurate with qualifications.  The BU Department of Philosophy affirms that the cultural, social, and philosophical diversity of our faculty, staff, and students is vitally important to the distinction and excellence of our research and academic programs. To that end, we seek someone willing and able to join in dialogue with philosophical perspectives other than their own, and who supports our institutional commitment to ensuring that BU is inclusive and equitable and a place where diverse constituents can thrive.  We welcome candidates whose research actively engages with scientific practice and who are able to build interdisciplinary bridges to other relevant departments across the university.  The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in BU’s internationally renowned Center for Philosophy & History of Science. A cover letter and complete dossier consisting of a CV, writing sample, research statement, teaching dossier, diversity statement, and three-five letters of recommendation, should be sent to https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/22372. Address queries to Chair, Philosophy Search Committee. The completed application should be received by November 10, 2022.  We are an equal opportunity employer, and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. We are a VEVRAA Federal Contractor.
