Job description

The University of Chicago’s Committee on Conceptual and Historical Studies of Science invites applications for a position as Instructor beginning September 1, 2023, for a two-year nonrenewable term.  Applicants should have received a PhD by April 1, 2023 and within the last five years. They should not already hold a tenure-track position. Expertise should be in the area of History of Science. Applications are welcome from scholars specializing in any period and area, though we have a particular interest in candidates with a focus on ancient and medieval sciences. This is a research and teaching post-doctoral position, requiring two courses be taught in the academic year; Chicago is on the quarter system, with three terms to the academic year.  The courses the instructor would offer each year would probably be one self-designed course in their field of interest and a second taught within our “Science, Culture, and Society” core sequence. This second course would deal with the Ancient period and perhaps the Middle Ages. (Details of courses currently offered in the SCS sequence are available at: https://chss.uchicago.edu/content/civilization-core-sequence-courses.) Chicago’s programs are quite interdisciplinary, and candidates should be ready to interact with faculty and students from an array of different specialties.

Applicants must apply online at http://apply.interfolio.com/112795. Please submit: (1) a cover letter; (2) a CV; (3) two letters of recommendation; (4) a teaching statement; (5) research statement; (6) a syllabus for a proposed course; (7) course evaluations or other evidence of past teaching performance (if available); (8) a writing sample (or samples) of no more than 30 pages in total length. Review of applications will begin on October 1, 2022 and will continue until the position is filled or the search has ended.

We seek a diverse pool of applicants who wish to join an academic community that places the highest value on rigorous inquiry and encourages diverse perspectives, experiences, groups of individuals, and ideas to inform and stimulate intellectual challenge, engagement, and exchange. The University’s Statements on Diversity are at https://provost.uchicago.edu/statements-diversity.
