Professor of Philosophy (EXPIRED)

Rice University’s Department of Philosophy seeks to hire a Full Professor to act as the next department chair. The area of specialization is open. Candidates must be able to demonstrate substantial administrative experience at the level of department chair, center director, or a comparable position.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses and continue research in their area of expertise. Rice University has a semester-based teaching schedule with a 2-2 teaching load, but a reduced teaching load for the department chair. Opportunities for interdisciplinary research projects and innovative teaching within and beyond Rice’s School of Humanities are a very high priority. The successful candidate must be able to integrate the research agenda and future direction of the Department of Philosophy into the priorities and vision of the School of Humanities and the university at large. Candidates that are able to demonstrate the inclusion of underrepresented perspectives or who bring an additional international perspective to philosophy are especially encouraged to apply.

Rice’s Department of Philosophy offers BA and PhD programs with a particularly strong and widely recognized research reputation in ethics and philosophy of mind. The department has close working relationships with other departments in the School of Humanities and it is also involved in a range of rapidly growing interdisciplinary programs, such as Politics, Law & Social Thought, the Center for the Study of Women, Gender & Sexuality, Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, and Medical Humanities.
