Position Description The Center for Statistics and the Social Sciences (CSSS) at the University of Washington invites applications for one full-time (9-month) tenure-track Assistant Professor, with an anticipated starting date of September 16, 2023. This CSSS core faculty position will be appointed 100% in one of the following Social Sciences departments: Communication, Philosophy, Political Science and Sociology. We seek a faculty member who will contribute to the development and application of statistical, data science, computational, or survey methods in the social sciences. All University of Washington faculty members engage in teaching, research and service. Specifically, duties of this position include undergraduate and graduate instruction and course development, mentoring diverse student populations, substantive quantitative research in a relevant social science field, as well as service shared between CSSS and the relevant social science department. The Center for Statistics and the Social Sciences (CSSS) is the nation’s preeminent center for the advancement of statistical methods for social science research. CSSS has, for 20+ years, taken the leading role in training graduate and undergraduate students in quantitative methods for the social sciences at the UW. The heart of CSSS is its core faculty members, who are hired specifically to study and teach at the intersection of statistics and social science. Since the center’s founding in 1999, our core faculty have been recognized for their innovations in statistical methods in the social sciences. The demand for graduate and undergraduate training in data science and quantitative methods in the social sciences is strong and growing. CSSS is uniquely positioned to meet this demand on campus. This new faculty position is key for fulfilling the teaching and research mission of CSSS. Qualifications This position requires a Ph.D., or foreign equivalent, in a relevant social science, statistics or a related field by the starting date.
