Job description

Widener University’s College of Arts and Sciences Humanities Division invites applications for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Philosophy beginning in fall 2023. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and a knowledge of current trends and research in their field(s). Teaching duties will include required courses in ethics and applied ethics for students majoring in business, engineering, and nursing as well courses required of all students as part of the University’s general education program. Opportunities exist as well for co-teaching of an interdisciplinary nature within the College of Arts and Sciences. The ability to contribute to racial-ethnic studies, gender studies, or cross-disciplinary area studies would be welcomed.

The successful candidate will demonstrate an active and coherent agenda in scholarly and professional development as well as the ability to contribute to a robust system of faculty governance. The Ph.D. in Philosophy or closely related field is required at the time of appointment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to):

Essential duties:

  • Teaching; Professional development relating to the discipline including pedagogy; publication of research; participation in academic citizenship at all levels within the University.

Secondary responsibilities:

  • Advising; department leadership

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education/training and experience required):

Required: 

  • A demonstrated commitment to undergraduate education and a PhD in philosophy or a philosophy-related discipline. ABD candidates may be considered if the degree will be completed by May 2023.

Preferred:

  • Prior experience in interdisciplinary teaching and team-taught courses
