Job description

The Post

The Lecturer in Philosophy will join a supportive, collaborative teaching and research culture within the Division of Law and Philosophy and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. We have a vibrant community of PhD/MPhil students across the St Andrews – Stirling joint programme in philosophy (SASP), plus a substantial taught Masters programmes within SASP, and a thriving interdisciplinary MSc in Human Rights and Diplomacy. Our undergraduate degree in Philosophy attracts both students wishing to study to Honours level, and students on other courses with an interest in our field. In REF2021 our overall profile was 81% 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent', with 100% of our research environment ranked 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent', and we were ranked joint 1st in Scotland for Philosophy impact.

The successful candidate will:

  • Be able to deliver and convene core undergraduate modules, ideally including ‘Reasoning and Argument’, for our undergraduate programme in Philosophy Single Honours and Joint Honours including Politics, Philosophy, and Economics, that could also be available to students in related disciplines including sciences.
  • Convene and deliver further undergraduate modules that will diversify our undergraduate curriculum, enhancing its appeal to students.

Research specialisms of particular interest include: epistemology (formal, political, social or traditional), metaphysics, philosophy of language, philosophy of logic, philosophy of mathematics, philosophy of mind, philosophy of science (construed broadly to include such specialisms as philosophy of artificial intelligence, philosophy of communication, philosophy of economics, philosophy of technology, amongst others), history of philosophy.

Description of Duties

  • Engage in individual and collaborative research, which aligns to the strategic direction of the University, develop a programme of research and disseminate results through regular publication in high impact journals, books and conference proceedings
  • Identify appropriate sources of funding, prepare research proposals for funding bodies and manage grants awarded
  • Supervise research students and staff as required, providing direction, support and guidance
  • Participate in the Faculty’s international engagement activities as required e.g delivering teaching, contributing to joint programmes and recruitment of students
  • Participate in, and develop, networks and collaborations both internally and externally to the Division/Faculty/University

Essential Criteria

Grade 7

  • PhD in relevant discipline or close to successful completion
  • Evidence of a developing publication record
  • Credible plans for the active pursuit of external research funding

Grade 8

  • PhD in relevant discipline 
  • Established track record of high quality published research
  • A record of involvement in applications for external funding for research and/or knowledge transfer
