Job description

Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada, and on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoplesthe Department of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts at Toronto Metropolitan University [TMU] (formerly Ryerson University) invites applications for a tenure- track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, effective July 1st, 2023 (subject to final budgetary approval).

The successful candidate will engage in a combination of teaching, scholarly, research, or creative activity, and service duties, while maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all activities. Teaching duties will include teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels, the supervision of students, and curriculum development. The standard teaching load is two courses in the Fall semester and two courses in the Winter semester. The successful candidate will pursue a strong, innovative research program that produces cutting-edge, high-quality results. The successful candidate will participate in the academic life of the Department of Philosophy, and the wider university community, through service activities.

Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in Philosophy by the appointment date. Candidates who are all-but-dissertation (ABD), and are able to demonstrate that they are very close to completion, may also be considered. 

In addition, candidates must present evidence of: 

  • excellence in research (relative to career stage), which may include: a robust research agenda; peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations in respected scholarly venues; strong letters of reference from well-established scholars; contributions to conference/symposia proceedings; book reviews; published reviews of the candidate’s work; other forms of scholarly expression, such as participation in public discourse and debate and non-peer-reviewed publications, which constitute a contribution to research; and awards, accolades, and other forms of recognition in the field; 
  • potential for teaching excellence at all levels, including the capacity to supervise undergraduate and graduate students (through a teaching dossier that includes the following items, as applicable: a statement of teaching philosophy, sample syllabi, teaching evaluations, and records of other relevant achievements in teaching); 
  • an ability and willingness to contribute to the life of the Philosophy Department and the wider university through collegial service; and
  • a commitment to our values of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion as they pertain to service, teaching, and scholarly, research, or creative activities, including a demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population.
