Job description |
Summary: Alma College in Alma, Michigan invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Philosophy in an area of applied philosophy, such as philosophy of law. This is a full-time, tenure-track faculty position beginning August 2023. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in philosophy prior to the start date. Teaching Responsibilities: The department seeks a candidate who will be able to teach a wide variety of classes including introduction to philosophy, ethics (including applied ethics), philosophy of law, logic, and philosophy of science. Ability to teach historical surveys is also desirable. The successful candidate should have demonstrated excellence in teaching and will mentor students and serve as an academic advisor. Typical teaching load is six units per year. Research and Service Responsibilities: The successful candidate is expected to establish a productive scholarly agenda. We also desire a faculty member who can contribute to the pre-law program and support students looking to go to law school. Service to the college through committee work and other activities is expected of all tenure-track faculty. External service to the public and to the discipline are supported. The Philosophy Program: The philosophy department at Alma College has a particular strength in the area of applied ethics, and is central to the pre-law program, but it aims to provide a solid grounding in all the core areas of philosophy. The philosophy courses offered serve the major, but also play a significant role in the core curriculum and several other majors. The successful candidate will have considerable autonomy in choosing what courses to teach, including in their area of specialization, but their primary responsibility will be ensuring that the department offers a sufficiently varied curriculum to support a robust major, while meeting the department’s extensive service requirements.
