Job description

The Department of Technology, Culture, and Society (TCS)  at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering invites applications for a full time, non-tenured, renewable faculty position at the level of Industry Assistant Professor, with a start date of September 1, 2023.

About TCS

The Department of Technology, Culture, and Society provides instruction and supports research in what we see as core elements of Tandon engineering:  creative, ethical, and sustainable design.  We deliver nationally-recognized undergraduate and graduate degrees in Integrated Design & Media (IDM); and offer best-in-class undergraduate coursework in ethics, sustainability and urban design, and science and technology studies. Situated on NYU’s Downtown Brooklyn campus and with access to world-class facilities, the Integrated Design & Media (IDM) program trains students in creative practice, design research and multidisciplinary experimentation with emerging media technologies.

Throughout the department, we emphasize an approach to technologies to support human values and interdependence, building a field of practice that combines the ethics of an arts practice with the technical rigor of engineering. We take pride in emphasizing justice and sustainability across the curriculum, with strengths in accessibility and inclusive design, environmental and ecological sustainability, the ethics and politics of technologies, alterity and speculative design, and feminism and STEM. Our diverse faculty have training in design, fine arts, and critical social sciences and engage in research and artistic practice using ethnographic methods, archival research, community-engaged research, practice-driven research, and more.

Qualifications

We are seeking a colleague to further develop and teach in our Ethics of Technology program (required for all Engineering undergraduates) as well as to teach thematic areas around ethics, advocacy, and activism within the Integrated Design & Media degree programs. We welcome both scholars and practitioners working in or at the intersection of Science and Technology Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, Philosophy of Technology, Cultural or Media Studies, Visual or Material Culture, Fine and Performing Arts, Art Theory and/or History, Critical Design Studies and/or History, Design Research, or other relevant fields.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a substantial commitment, whether through practice, publishing, and/or teaching, to working on issues of social justice and technology. This may include the relationship between technology and design and race, gender, class, disability, health, or culture. We especially invite applicants who foreground historically marginalized perspectives in their work, and\or have a critical take on historically dominant and normative canons, paradigms, structures and practices.

The successful candidate will teach courses in the department’s required Ethics and Technology courses and in the IDM degree programs. They will also participate in curriculum development initiatives related to undergraduate and graduate seminar courses, with a focus on ethics and technology at the undergraduate level, and critical theory and research courses relevant to art, media and design students at the graduate level.

The successful candidate should be an excellent teacher with a strong commitment to student mentorship. Candidates must have a terminal degree in their field (Ph.D. strongly preferred) and a strong record of scholarship, design or artistic practice, and/or technical innovation in their areas of focus. We welcome candidates with a hybrid, interdisciplinary academic background (e.g., degrees in engineering or arts/design, and humanities or social sciences), and whose scholarship and/or work is concerned with themes of advocacy or activism, social or civic engagement, cultural and environmental sustainability, and/or equity in media or design contexts are especially encouraged to apply.
