Job description

The Philosophy Department at Bowdoin College invites applications for a tenure- track position as assistant professor to begin July 1, 2023. AOS: Open. AOC: ancient Greek philosophy. The successful candidate will teach ancient Greek philosophy annually as part of the major sequence. Preference given to candidates whose teaching contributes to one or more of our relatively new programs, Digital and Computational Studies and Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Studies. This is a full-time position with a teaching load of two courses each semester. PhD expected by the time of appointment.

Bowdoin requires its faculty to have a promise of long-term successful scholarly or artistic engagement and a strong commitment to inclusive excellence in their teaching. (For a description of inclusive excellence, please consult the following resource: Williams, et. al., Toward a Model of Inclusive Excellence). We are particularly interested in candidates with a strong commitment to undergraduate liberal arts education.
Bowdoin College offers opportunities for professional development, a fully-funded, year-long pre-tenure sabbatical leave (after three years of teaching and successful reappointment), and regular, generously funded, post-tenure sabbaticals. Support for teaching, grant-writing, publication, digital initiatives, computing software, conference travel support, and community partnerships in courses is readily available to all faculty. The College also offers robust programming and resources for establishing and enhancing mentoring networks.
The Bowdoin community warmly welcomes people of all backgrounds. We encourage applications from candidates committed to the inclusive instruction and support of a diverse student population and who will enrich and contribute to the College’s multifaceted diversity. We especially encourage people from historically excluded groups to apply. Accessibility during the application and interview stages, as well as once employed, is a priority of the College: https://www.bowdoin.edu/accessibility/index.html. We recognize that recruiting and retaining faculty may involve considerations of spouses and domestic partners. To that end, where possible, the College will attempt to accommodate and respond creatively to the needs of partners and spouses of members of the faculty.
Bowdoin College accepts only electronic submissions. Please submit a 1) c.v.; 2) a letter of application that includes a description of your approach to teaching and your teaching experiences, your research accomplishments and research goals; 3) and the names and contact information for three references who have agreed to provide letters of recommendation. Letter writers are contacted upon submission of the application.
Review of applications will begin on December 1, 2022 and continue until the position is filled. Founded in 1794 on the Maine coast, Bowdoin is one of the oldest and most selective coeducational, residential liberal arts colleges in the country.
