Job description

The Department of Philosophy at Denison University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning in August 2023. The successful candidate will be an engaging and effective teacher, committed to active philosophical engagement with students, and a broadly trained philosopher with expertise in ancient or medieval philosophy. They will complement a pluralistic department with a tradition of excellence both in undergraduate teaching in a liberal arts context and in active and productive scholarship. We are looking to diversify our faculty and curriculum without replicating current areas of departmental expertise. Candidates will teach a two-three course load across all levels of the curriculum and regularly at the introductory level within the department and the university writing program. They will have opportunities to develop new courses in their areas of interest and collaborate with other departments and programs at Denison. Candidates are required to have by start date a Ph.D. in Philosophy. (ABD will be considered as Instructor until Ph.D. is attained). Evidence of potential for excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level is a necessary condition for appointment. To achieve our mission as a liberal arts college, we continually strive to attract and hire candidates with diverse backgrounds, experiences and identities. Candidates from historically underrepresented groups in the profession are especially encouraged to apply.

Denison University is an academically rigorous liberal arts college with an increasingly diverse campus community. It offers a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package as well as an annual professional development fund to support faculty both as teachers and scholars. Denison is located in the village of Granville, 30 minutes from Columbus, Ohio, the state capital, which hosts a wide range of cultural and artistic opportunities. Granville also offers an excellent public school system and easy access to outdoor activities.

Candidates are required to have a PhD in Philosophy by the start date in August 2023 with specialization in the history of philosophy. (ABD will be considered as Instructor until PhD is attained.) Candidates are expected to be engaging and effective teachers who can maintain a productive scholarly program of research while contributing to the department and broader college.

Review of applications will begin December 19th. The position will remain open until filled.
