Job description

The Department of Philosophy wishes to appoint an open-ended Lecturer in Political Philosophy, broadly construed. This is an ideal opportunity for a scholar with outstanding research potential and excellent teaching ability to join one of the leading philosophy departments in the United Kingdom.

We seek a new member of staff, at Lecturer level, with demonstrable research potential of the highest standard. Their area of research specialism will be within the area of political philosophy, broadly construed to include, amongst others, possible specialisms in feminism, philosophy of race and applied ethics. This post will be full-time and open-ended.

The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining the department’s high standard of teaching through delivering modules on political philosophy at multiple levels (undergraduate and Masters), undertaking MA and PhD supervision, and carrying out suitable administrative duties to a high level of proficiency. An ability to design modules with a focus on non-Western Philosophy would be desirable. The successful candidate will develop their research profile through regular publication in appropriate peer-reviewed venues. They will apply for research funding and supervise research students. They will contribute to activities within our Centre for Engaged Philosophy, with opportunities for a leadership role. Potential for contribution to a REF Impact Case Study will be an advantage.

Furthermore, the successful candidate will be expected to take part in the lively research culture in the department, including attending departmental seminars and reading groups.

The Department of Philosophy currently consists of 26 members of staff, across an unusually broad range of areas. We have a thriving research culture, and in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework our publications were ranked 2nd in the UK. Each year the department hosts a wide range of conferences, workshops, reading groups and seminars. In addition, we have been home to a variety of large research projects, including the Leverhulme Bias and Blame Project, the Leverhulme Pragmatism and Idealism Network, and the AHRC Culture and Mind Project. We are also home to the Hang Seng Centre for Cognitive Science, the Centre for Engaged Philosophy and (alongside York and Leeds) the White Rose Centre for the History of Philosophy.

We have a large and vibrant postgraduate community. Our operations are underpinned by a team of 8 administrative staff within the department. We offer BAs in single honours Philosophy; Philosophy, Religion and Ethics; Politics Philosophy and Economics (PPE); and eight dual honours degrees. We have an MA in Philosophy and interdisciplinary MAs in Political Theory (run with the Politics Department) and in Cognitive Studies. In addition, we have home and international PhD students across a wide range of areas of the subject and with a range of different funding sources.
