Job description

The Susan Currier Visiting Professorship for Teaching Excellence in the College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California is a residential visiting teaching professorship that recognizes superior teaching in the liberal arts, emphasizing (where possible) the intersection between gender and sexuality, race, and transnational/global justice and humanitarian concerns. The goal of the Susan Currier Visiting Professorship is to bring a faculty member with a distinguished record of teaching excellence to Cal Poly for the purpose of sharing expertise and passion for teaching, social justice, and the liberal arts. It can accommodate visiting faculty on semester or quarter schedules. 

The Susan Currier Visiting Professorship is a full-time, one-quarter, nonrenewable appointment to cover the Fall 2023 (9/14/2023-12/16/2023) OR Winter 2024 (1/8/2024-3/25/2024) OR Spring 2024 (4/2/2024-6/16/2024) quarter. A halftime, two consecutive quarter, nonrenewable appointment may be considered. Funding to support the position entails a one-course teaching assignment, with the course focused on a topic in the visitor’s field of expertise, plus assigned time for service to the college and/or university. Service includes presentation of the Susan Currier Memorial Lecture (a major university-wide presentation on a topic appropriate to the visitor's field) and other activities to be determined that promote excellence in teaching (e.g., participating in the CLA Diversity & Curriculum and/or Cal Poly's Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology event series; offering a master class; directing a main stage theatre production; producing/organizing an exhibition; etc.).

Salary is commensurate with qualifications, expertise, and experience. In addition, and in accordance with CSU and university travel reimbursement guidelines, the visiting professorship provides limited funds to partially reimburse documented housing expenses during the visiting appointment, and to reimburse documented travel expenses for one trip to and from the location of the home institution. Library privileges, some administrative support, and assistance in finding housing are also provided. 

Depending on the background of the individual selected for the position, the Susan Currier Visiting Professorship for Teaching Excellence will be situated in one of the following CLA departments: Art & Design; Communication Studies; English; Ethnic Studies; History; Interdisciplinary Studies in the Liberal Arts; Music; Philosophy; Theatre and Dance; Women's, Gender & Queer Studies; or World Languages and Cultures, but it is open to applicants in other fields of study traditionally associated with the liberal arts.

Terminal degree in a field of study associated with the liberal arts or demonstrated equivalent professional experience. Distinguished record of teaching excellence in a field related to one or more of the academic departments listed above also required.

Demonstrated experience and commitment to student-centered learning and teaching, as well as the ability to collaboratively work in multidisciplinary settings is required. Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language is required. 


Ph.D., MFA, or other appropriate terminal degree in the liberal arts. Preference will also be given to candidates whose teaching, research, and/or service emphasizes the intersection between gender and sexuality, race, and transnational/global justice and humanitarian concerns.

Preference will be given to those with experience in working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive and inclusive environment.  Preference will also be given to those with relevant work experience and those who bring professional capabilities.


The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Following a conditional offer of employment, a background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate may start work with Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.
