Job Title:

Baruch College – Lecturer (Doctoral Schedule) - Philosophy

Job Description:

The Department of Philosophy at Baruch College, CUNY, is seeking applicants who are completing or have attained a Ph.D. in Philosophy for a full-time Lecturer (Doctoral Schedule) position to begin Fall 2023. The position’s primary responsibility will involve teaching and helping to coordinate an introductory-level undergraduate course in Ethics and Critical Thinking. This position represents an investment by the College to increase student contact with full-time faculty during students' crucial first year.

Persons appointed to the rank of Lecturer are entitled to CUNY’s generous faculty retirement and benefits packages. Lecturer faculty participate as full faculty members of the Philosophy Department, the College, and the University. Service may include committee work, mentoring faculty, and contributing to projects and programs—especially those related to teaching and learning. In their fifth year, Lecturers will be eligible for the Promotion to a Certificate of Continuous Employment (tenure-like status) based on teaching excellence and dedicated service.

Baruch College, located in the historic Gramercy Park/Flatiron district of Manhattan, is one of eleven senior colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY). We are proud to serve a diverse and engaged student body of over 18,000. Our diverse students come from a wide range of racial, ethnic, economic, religious, linguistic, and national origin backgrounds, and include many recent immigrants as well as individuals who are the first in their family to attend college. Baruch is ranked among the top institutions of higher education in the nation by The Chronicle of Higher Education for promoting student social mobility. Baruch is also listed among the nation’s top public colleges for academic excellence. Baruch seeks staff and faculty members who thrive in multicultural academic environments and are committed to access and excellence in higher education. Visit us at https:// www.baruch.cuny.edu/.

NOTES:

All CUNY employees must reside within a commutable distance to the tri-state area.

Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.

Compensation and Benefits:

$69,665 - $82,102; commensurate with qualifications and experience.

CUNY offers faculty a competitive compensation and benefits package covering health insurance, pension and retirement benefits, paid parental leave, and savings programs. We also provide mentoring and support for research, scholarship, and publication as part of our commitment to ongoing faculty professional development.

Qualifications:

We are seeking accomplished teachers and pedagogical innovators with evidence of creative course and assignment design, and demonstrable effectiveness teaching in a variety of modalities. Successful candidates will also be expected to participate in Baruch’s “Inclusive Pedagogy Workshop”, CUNY’s ‘Innovative Teaching Academy”, and related initiatives. Lecturer faculty are, or have the potential to be, "master teachers" who occupy faculty lines at the College that are focused almost entirely on teaching. Lecturer track faculty teach 24 credit hours per year.

Standard courses in philosophy are 3 credit courses, so primary teaching responsibilities entail four courses per term (all at the introductory level).

Please note that Baruch College does not offer visa sponsorship for Lecturer positions for financial reasons.  Successful applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. at the time of appointment.
