The University of St Andrews invites applications for a lectureship in Philosophy, within the School of Philosophical, Anthropological and Film Studies, with a start date of 1st September 2023.

The post is intended to further strengthen our research and teaching on current issues in Social Philosophy, particularly in gender theory and feminism.

The successful applicant will have a growing international research reputation evidenced by a track record of high quality publications, or will be able to provide evidence of clear potential to produce work of this kind.

They should be able to make connections between their research interests and areas of the subject taught by existing members of the department (such as, but not limited to, epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of language, or ethical theory). They will also show a commitment to high quality teaching at all levels, from first-year undergraduate teaching to PhD supervision. Excellent teaching skills and an interest in promoting knowledge exchange are essential. They will also be asked to carry out standard academic administrative tasks, and will show a commitment to performing these in an efficient and collegial way.

Candidates will hold a doctorate in Philosophy or a cognate discipline. Applications from candidates who have not yet been awarded a doctorate will be considered only where there is clear evidence that they will be awarded the doctorate by 1st September 2023, and their application would have to show exceptional merit in order to be competitive. Further details of the position and the application process are given in the Further Particulars document for the post (available from the application portal or via the link below).

Prospective candidates are invited to contact the Head of Department, Dr Simon Prosser ([email protected]), or Dr Lisa Jones ([email protected]), if they wish to enquire informally about the position.

Your application should include a brief covering letter (no more than two pages, summarising your background and suitability for the role, including a brief summary of your research interests, including plans for impact (in the sense relevant to the REF), and teaching experience), and a CV (giving details of education, career to date, publications, teaching experience and any other information relevant to the person specification described above). You may also include supplementary material giving evidence of teaching ability, but please do not include writing samples or lengthy descriptions of your research at this stage. If you wish to submit more documents than the application portal accepts, please combine documents together.

Applications are particularly welcome from people from the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community, and other protected characteristics who are under-represented in academic posts at the University.
