Job description

Salary: £43,414 - £53,353 per annum

The University of St Andrews invites applications for a lectureship in Philosophy, within the School of Philosophical, Anthropological and Film Studies, with a start date of 1st September 2023.

The main purpose of the post is teach and to carry out research in any area of Applied Philosophy, and to use this research to produce demonstrable effects on, changes or benefits to the economy, society, culture, public policy or services, health, the environment or quality of life, beyond academia.

The successful candidate must be committed to the production of high quality Impact Case Studies appropriate for submission to the UK Research Excellence Framework (REF) (for information about the REF see https://www.ref.ac.uk/, and for information about impact case studies see https://www.ref.ac.uk/).

The successful applicant will have a growing international research reputation evidenced by a track record of high quality publications, or will be able to provide evidence of clear potential to produce work of this kind. They will also show a commitment to high quality teaching at all levels, from first-year undergraduate teaching to PhD supervision. Excellent teaching skills and an interest in promoting knowledge exchange are essential. They will also be asked to carry out standard academic administrative tasks, and will show a commitment to performing these in an efficient and collegial way.

Candidates will hold a doctorate in Philosophy or a cognate discipline. Applications from candidates who have not yet been awarded a doctorate will be considered only where there is clear evidence that they will be awarded the doctorate by 1st September 2023, and their application would have to show exceptional merit in order to be competitive. Your application should include a brief covering letter (no more than two pages, summarising your background and suitability for the role, including a brief summary of your research interests, including plans for impact (in the sense relevant to the REF), and teaching experience), and a CV (giving details of education, career to date, publications, teaching experience and any other information relevant to the person specification described above). You may also include supplementary material giving evidence of teaching ability, but please do not include writing samples or lengthy descriptions of your research at this stage.
