Job description

The Humanities Collegiate Division is accepting applications for an Instructional Professor (open rank) and Program Coordinator who will manage the major/minor in Cognitive Science and teach a maximum of four courses a year in that curriculum (course load dependent on additional duties). This is a full-time position with an initial term of two to five years, depending on rank, to start September 1, 2023.

In consultation with the Faculty Director of the major/minor in Cognitive Science, the Program Coordinator will be responsible for planning, staffing, and coordinating all Cognitive Science courses. Teaching is central to this position, and we seek candidates proven to be highly effective teachers in Cognitive Science and/or at least one of its core disciplines: Computer Science, Psychology, Philosophy, Linguistics or Neuroscience. Possible course offerings will include the foundational courses for the major, “Mind, Brain and Meaning” and “Cognitive Models,” as well as other courses based around the expertise and interests of the individual hired into this position. In conjunction with the Faculty Director, the Program Coordinator will also develop the profile and mission of the major/minor in Cognitive Science. The Program Coordinator will help to enable extracurricular programs in Cognitive Science at the University more broadly, to develop on-campus programming, and to explore opportunities for student research and career pathways. Course assignments and other duties of the Program Coordinator will be determined annually by the Faculty Director of the Cognitive Science major/minor.

Minimum qualifications are a MA/MS or PhD in Cognitive Science or a related field, and experience teaching at the university or post-secondary level. Experience in program development and/or coordination preferred.

Applicants should submit their applications through the University of Chicago’s Interfolio website, http://apply.interfolio.com/120014 and upload a current curriculum vitae; the names and contact information [email, regular mail, and telephone] for three references whose letters of recommendation may be solicited; a cover letter of no more than three pages that addresses professional experience, inclusive of previous administrative and teaching experience, and that offers a cohesive vision for the undergraduate study of Cognitive Science; and a teaching portfolio containing syllabi from previous courses, student evaluations (if available), examples of assignments, and a teaching statement.

Applications are due February 28, 2023. Only complete applications will be reviewed. The position is contingent upon budgetary approval.
This position will be part of the Service Employees International Union.
