Job description

We are looking for a colleague with a research expertise that resonates with the research profiles of our groups. We expect the new colleague to develop a research line that brings together topics in the history of European philosophy (where we are particularly interested in strengthening our expertise in medieval and/or Renaissance philosophy) and in Islamic philosophy (here, we are open as to the specific area of expertise). The specific research focus can be negotiated according to the new colleague’s expertise. With regard to teaching, the new colleague is expected to contribute to introductory courses in both the Islamic and Arabic studies and the philosophy programmes (examples: “Introduction to Islam”; “Qur’an and Hadith”, “History of philosophy: Medieval and early modern philosophy”; “The place of humans in the natural order”; “History of metaphysics”), and to MA-courses.

We are looking for a colleague who:

  • has teaching and research expertise in the domain of History of Islamic and European Philosophy;
  • holds a (prior to appointment) completed PhD in Philosophy and/or Islamic studies;
  • has the language skills required for this position (in particular, proficiency in Arabic);
  • has a vision on, and perhaps experience with, ways to link that domain in teaching and/or research with other knowledge domains, based on an articulated teaching and research philosophy (multi-, inter- or transdisciplinarity);
  • has an open attitude and is able to switch easily within multidisciplinary and interprofessional teams;
  • is interested in team teaching and team science to address social issues.

The candidate appointed to this position will be expected, in due course, to be able to teach in Dutch and English. International candidates will be helped to acquire Dutch language skills in the first two years of their appointment.

Everyone deserves to feel at home at our university. We therefore welcome staff from a wide variety of backgrounds and perspectives, regardless of race, skin colour, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, origin, disability, neurodiversity or age.
