Job description

Profile of the candidates
The successful candidate holds a PhD in philosophy. They are committed, engaging, and capable teachers, as demonstrated by prior teaching experience and/or a sample lecture (if invited for an interview). They enjoy and are capable of teaching philosophy to both philosophers and compulsory courses to non-philosophers. We welcome candidates that can teach outside their areas of specialization. We welcome applications from teachers with a specialization in various philosophical traditions, including but not limited to analytic and continental philosophy.

The candidate is a good researcher with a track record of publications (e.g., in academic journals or books with good publishers) or show the capability of developing such a record. The candidate is expected to continue publishing in good journals. Quality of papers is more important than quantity, but two papers every three years is considered a minimum goal. The candidate applies regularly for external research funding. The department of philosophy finds it important that their staff participates actively in the research activities of the Department and communicates their research to people outside their specialization or philosophical orientation. The candidate is open to interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration. The successful candidate finds it important to engage with society as a philosopher, for example by participating in public debate.

Specifics of the positions

AoS
Open to the greatest possible extent but given the current (teaching) needs of the department we especially welcome candidates with expertise in at least one of the following domains: history of philosophy, continental philosophy, or business ethics. We value candidates with a broad approach in these fields. The research profile should also complement the (research) profile of the people working in the Department (see website).

AoC

The successful candidate will coordinate or be involved in teaching major courses on (business) ethics, political philosophy, social philosophy, or philosophy of culture in non-philosophy Bachelor programs. The candidates will also teach courses in (organization) ethics, continental philosophy, history of philosophy and/or social philosophy in the Philosophy BA or MA Programs. Thesis supervision will also be part of their tasks. Fluency in Dutch (C2) is a strong advantage for the position.

Employment terms and conditions
If not already acquired, successful candidates are expected to acquire a University Teaching Qualification (BKO). Tilburg University offers courses for acquiring this certification. It is welcomed if the candidates are prepared to move to (the vicinity of) Tilburg. Successful candidates must remain at least 80% of their working days in the Netherlands (as a requirement of tax and social security laws).

Specifics position
The position (Dutch: UD Filosofie) includes teaching (50-60 %) and research responsibilities (40%) as well as management or academic citizenship tasks (0-10 %). Teaching responsibilities include coordination of or participation in 4-5 courses per year at both the Bachelor and Master levels. A significant portion of these tasks involves teaching philosophy to large classes of non-philosophy students (at Bachelor level). A teaching free block per year is given to all assistant professors at this point.
Given the Department’s overall teaching needs, societal embeddedness, and other responsibilities, moderate proficiency in Dutch is a long-term requirement. The successful candidate expected to be able to speak Dutch at an advanced level (B2) after 6 years (intermediate goal: A2 after 4 years). As many courses are taught in English, the candidate must have a good command of English from the start and obtain C2 level in writing and speaking in English before the contract becomes permanent.

The position will be ranked in the Dutch university job ranking system (UFO) as assistant professor 2 (“universitair docent 2”). The starting gross salary for a full-time appointment is (minimally) € 3807,- up to (maximally) € 5211,- per month (max  €75.900,- all in per year). In principle, successful candidates receive a permanent contract after 18 months.

Application and Information
The candidate should submit all of the following documents:
(1) a letter of application, which should include mention of the position(s) you are applying for and may include explanations of any circumstances that you would like to be taken into account when considering your application (e.g., parental leave, etc.).

(3) a teaching dossier
(4) a sample syllabus for a 6 ECTS compulsory Philosophy course aimed at 2nd year Bachelor students of either Human Resources Management, or Business Ethics (2 pages suffice); always clearly indicate the selected target student audience.

(6) a research plan (only position assistant professor).

Applications must be submitted online.
The deadline for applications is 15 March 2023.

We will inform shortlisted candidates, on or before 31 March 2023. Interviews and test lectures will be held on 13 and 14 April 2023, preferably in person but online if necessary. Decisions will be announced before 20 April 2023.

Note for PhD students: your application for Assistant Professor will only be taken into account if you can provide an official guarantee that your public defense is scheduled before 1 September 2023. Your application for the Teacher Position will only be taken into account if you can provide an official letter from your supervisors confirming that you will be granted your PhD before 1 January 2024.
