Job description

The Symbolic Systems Program at Stanford seeks to hire a lecturer for a three-year, renewable term. Symbolic Systems is a unique, interdisciplinary program focused on the intersection of minds and machines. We offer a rigorous BS program with concentrations in artificial intelligence, cognitive science, natural language processing, neuroscience, human-computer interaction, and other areas as well as a small research-focused MS degree.   Application at: https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/program/24415

A successful hire will be expected to (1) teach undergraduate level courses for Symbolic Systems, (2) perform other SYMSYS-related duties, and (3) contribute to Stanford's COLLEGE program. Stanford has been involved in a major remaking of introductory general education and the COLLEGE program is a new first-year requirement. You can read about its offerings here: https://college.stanford.edu/courses.

Stanford is on the quarter system (three academic quarters of 10 weeks each) and the normal teaching load of a lecturer is the equivalent of 6 courses over the three quarters. We anticipate that the position’s teaching load will be:  ● two quarters in which one course will be taught and the lecturer will perform other program-related duties (e.g., program capstone development and advising, assistance with graduate admissions, and coordinating undergraduate research placements), and  ● one quarter in which the lecturer will contribute to Stanford’s first-year COLLEGE program by teaching two independent sections of one of the COLLEGE courses.

We will endeavor to provide opportunities for the Lecturer to continue their practice as a scholar both through annual contributions to a travel and professional expenses account and via a workload during the academic year that allows time for research and scholarly writing.

Successful candidates will have a PhD in hand no later than July 1. The position will begin on August 1 2023 and the successful hire will be expected to attend the COLLEGE training program in August.

An application should include a CV and a cover letter that addresses your qualifications including:  ● intersection of academic interests with the mission of the Symbolic Systems program;  ● demonstrated excellence in teaching, especially with first year students;  ● relevant research and teaching related to classes in the COLLEGE curriculum; and  ● an indication of what other classes you would be prepared to teach (especially as related to potential seminars that might be of interest to Symbolic Systems students).    Please also provide the email addresses of three references, at least one of whom can speak to your teaching record. After an initial review phase, we will request letters of reference and other teaching materials for short-listed applicants.

The salary range for this position is $84-86K for 2023-24. Stanford University has provided a pay range representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for the position. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the qualifications of the selected candidate, budget availability, and internal equity.

Further information about Stanford Symbolic Systems may be found at https://symsys.stanford.edu. Inquiries may be directed to Michael Frank, Director, [email protected].

The application process will close on March 15th, 2023.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
