Job description

The Initiative in Ancient and Contemporary Philosophy, led by Professor Katja Maria Vogt, fosters a collaborative community across academic disciplines including Philosophy and Classical Studies. It hosts a research group, a series with guest speakers called Workshop in Ancient and Contemporary Philosophy, as well as a summer work-in-progress workshop. The Initiative’s activities typically include PhD students in ancient philosophy and offer research opportunities to undergraduates. We actively contribute to making the study of ancient philosophy more diverse and inclusive.

Vogt’s Initiative in Ancient and Contemporary Philosophy invites applications for a postdoctoral research scholar who will work in one or several of the following fields: ancient philosophy in any tradition, including but not limited to classical Mediterranean; contemporary philosophy that is in dialogue with one or several ancient philosophical traditions. The postdoctoral research scholar will be appointed in an academic department in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences appropriate to the degree of the incumbent’s own field.

The postdoctoral research scholar will be responsible for pursuing their own research and for contributing to the Initiative’s activities. Regarding the latter, the fellow has the opportunity to be involved in the Workshop in Ancient and Contemporary Philosophy. The fellow will also contribute to the planning of an interdisciplinary class on life, death, and meaning, which brings together philosophical and humanistic work with research in medicine.

The appointment is initially for one year, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and funding. In the first year, the fellow has no teaching duties; if the fellowship is extended, the fellow is expected to contribute to the teaching, most likely, of the interdisciplinary class.

The ideal candidate will have innovative research in their field of specialization, as well as outstanding motivation, drive, and a demonstrated aptitude for research.

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
