Job description

Starting salary: £61,689, rising annually to £67,393

You will be:

  • leading the development of all aspects of the department’s work and its programmes of study; managing the effective and efficient delivery of these programmes; monitoring and improving academic quality and standards; and enhancing learning and teaching within the department
  • supporting the Associate Dean (Research and Knowledge Exchange) in fostering research, consultancy, knowledge transfer and scholarship within the department
  • planning, managing, monitoring and controlling the human, financial and physical resources allocated to the department
  • promoting the department in its professional, local, regional, national and international constituencies
  • representing the department within the wider discipline and professions and developing and maintaining links with external bodies on behalf of the department
  • leading and managing the academic staff of the department; including allocation of workloads, staff development, performance review, recruitment and selection, health and safety; ensuring that the University and faculty policy and procedure is followed
  • an active member of the Faculty Senior Management Team, acting as a communication conduit between the Faculty SMT, the department staff and a range of directorate colleagues across the University; contributing to faculty strategic planning and translating strategy into operational plans for the department.

You should have:

  • an undergraduate degree and a PhD in a relevant subject
  • evidence of leadership, management, teaching and research in an appropriate subject
  • evidence of successfully managing academic staff; including workload allocation, staff development, performance review, recruitment and selection
  • a knowledge and understanding of higher education systems and procedures for academic quality and academic development
  • an understanding of the role of professional statutory and regulatory bodies in relation to higher education, if appropriate, and the disciplines within the department
  • evidence of successful team building and influencing skills
  • excellent interpersonal skills
  • the ability to operate effectively as part of the Faculty Management Team
  • a collegiate and facilitative leadership style
  • sound judgement and practical problem- solving skills
  • strong intellectual resources
  • a commitment to the University’s values, aims and objectives, and an enthusiasm for what it is seeking to achieve.
