Job description

The Faculty of Philosophy, University of Oxford, in association with Somerville College, wishes to appoint a Departmental Lecturer in Ancient Philosophy to cover the teaching and other duties of a permanent postholder during a period of externally-funded research leave. This post is for a fixed term up to 18 September 2024, starting 16 September 2023.

The person appointed will be expected to be able to deliver lectures in Ancient Philosophy to undergraduates, to provide graduate teaching (classes or supervision) to masters students, and to deliver an average of 8 contact hours per week during term time of undergraduate tutorial teaching for Somerville College. In addition, the appointed person will conduct research in Ancient Philosophy, and will undertake administration for the Faculty and the College including, but not limited to, participating in the annual admissions exercises and acting as assessor for undergraduate and graduate examinations.

For the college, the successful candidate must be able to provide tutorials in introductory Moral Philosophy, introductory metaphysics and epistemology (‘General Philosophy’), and Plato’s Euthyphro and Meno both in Greek and in translation; and for advanced undergraduates, tutorials in Plato’s Republic in Greek and translation, Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics in Greek and translation, and in Ethics. Candidates should also be willing to teach at least one of: introductory logic, Aristotle on Nature, Life and Mind in Greek and translation, or Plato on Knowledge, Language and Reality (Theaetetus and Sophist) in Greek and translation.  Further information can be found here.

The successful candidate should normally have received the degree of PhD or DPhil in Philosophy, or a closely related discipline, or at least have submitted a completed doctoral dissertation for examination by the closing date for applications to this post.

Candidates must have an outstanding research record appropriate to the stage of their career with evidence of, or evidence of potential for producing, significant research in the area of Ancient Philosophy. They must provide evidence of the ability to provide excellent teaching and must have the ability and willingness to assume pastoral responsibilities associated with undergraduate and graduate teaching, and to act as an assessor at graduate and undergraduate level.
