Job description

Indian River State College is a public college offering Bachelor’s Degree programs, Associate degrees for university transfer, career training and professional and personal development. The College serves the educational, career training and cultural needs of a four county area on the eastern coast of Florida. IRSC has full service campuses in Fort Pierce, Port St. Lucie, Vero Beach, Stuart, and Okeechobee. IRSC offers Bachelor’s degree programs in organizational management, public safety administration, health care management, biology, math and science education, nursing, human services, and digital media. About 12,000 full-time students and approximately 35,000 area residents receive educational services each year from IRSC. We are seeking “Contingent Upon Budgetary Approval” an Assistant Professor in Philosophy.

The qualifications and skill requirements for this position include:

  • Doctorate (PhD) degree in Philosophy;
  • Two to five years teaching experience in a community college or in another post-secondary institution;
  • Proven knowledge of and experience in teaching Introduction to Philosophy, Critical Thinking, or Ethics;
  • Excellent communication skills – both verbal and written are essential;
  • Ability to recognize and to respond to the individual differences of students from a culturally diverse studentpopulation;
  • Willingness to make students active partners in the teaching/learning process;
  • Ability to communicate the concepts and theories of philosophy in practical ways;
  • Computer literacy and experience using computers in the classroom with a willingness to apply technology andinnovative approaches to the teaching of philosophy;
  • Research and publications useful to classroom instruction are encouraged;
  • A willingness to apply technology and innovative approaches to teaching is essential;
  • Experience in distance learning instruction is preferred;Interest or experience in writing grant proposals in the humanities is preferred;
  • Interest or experience in integrating applied learning/service learning into the curriculum is preferred;
  • All instructors must meet the appropriate credentialing requirements for the Southern Association for Colleges and Schools (SACS).
