Job description

The department of Religion & Philosophy at Berry College invites applications for a 2-year Visiting Assistant Professor of Philosophy to begin in August 2023.  This position is integral to the Religion & Philosophy Department’s role in serving the college’s mission to help students integrate the life of the mind with their moral, civic, and spiritual lives. While serving students of all faiths and eschewing denominational affiliation, the college continues to follow its founder’s lead in rooting its key values in the Christian tradition.

Accordingly, the Religion & Philosophy Department at Berry occupies a unique space. We train many students for Christian ministry, but provide students of various faiths headed for various lay professions the opportunity to engage meaningfully with the big questions. Through our general education program, all students gain exposure to the tools of philosophical analysis and the academic study of religion.

The successful candidate for this position will be an expert in philosophy of religion, as demonstrated by relevant degrees, research, and teaching experience. The teaching load will consist primarily of introductory courses serving the general education (“Foundations”) program, which could include Introduction to Philosophy and Critical Thinking (an introduction to deductive and especially inductive logic), as well as upper-level courses.

The key qualities we seek in a candidate are superior expertise in the relevant subjects, deep care for students, and collegiality. We oversee student research, supervise student workers, and engage students in outreach to the Rome community. Our mentorship of students extends beyond the purely academic to students’ biggest questions and biggest life decisions. Excellence in one’s academic discipline is crucial to this role, but so is passion for student engagement.
