Job description

Position 

The Philosophy Department at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Ethics and Political & Social Philosophy. The appointment is for two years, subject to a positive performance review after the first year. The salary is $60,000 CAD plus benefits, and a $2,000 research budget. The fellow will have access to shared office space, library services, and IT services. The fellow may have the opportunity to teach at the UG level for additional pay as a sessional instructor (conditional on departmental teaching needs). 

The fellowship is affiliated with the Canada Research Chair in Ethics and Political & Social Philosophy held by Kimberley Brownlee. The fellow will undertake single-authored and collaborative research in normative theory pertaining to social connection and sociability, e.g. social human rights, freedom of association, social connectedness, belonging, loneliness, interactional ethics, or interspecies sociality. The fellow will co-organise project activities, will participate in departmental events, and will present work in progress at UBC seminars.

Start Date: September 1, 2023 (or as soon as possible thereafter). 

Required Qualifications 

·      A PhD in Philosophy or a cognate discipline, obtained before the fellowship start date. The fellowship is an early career position intended for someone who is within five years of their PhD.

·      Demonstrable research excellence with expertise in ethics or political and social philosophy 

·      Familiarity with debates about human rights or care ethics, or with work at the intersection of philosophy and social psychology 

·      Well-defined research plans for the period of the fellowship 

·      Capacity to work well independently and collaboratively 

·      Capacity to conduct research in a timely fashion and to meet appropriate deadlines 

·      Professional written and oral communication skills in English 

·      Willingness to engage in the organisation of project activities
