Job description

The Department of Political Science, Philosophy and Economics in the Faculty of Arts and Science at Nipissing University invites applications from candidates for a 10-month Limited Term Appointment (LTA), commencing August 1, 2023.

The Philosophy program at Nipissing offers an Honours Specialization, Specialization, Major, and Minor degree. The core of the program is historical, and has strengths in value theory. For more information on the program, please visit: Philosophy at Nipissing University.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • completed or be near to completion of (ABD) a Ph.D. in Philosophy or a closely related discipline,
  • evidence of excellence in teaching at the University level, particularly in the history of philosophy,
  • an active research agenda, in any area of Philosophy.

The successful candidate should be prepared to teach the following courses:

  • PHIL 1117 Values and the Human Condition (Winter term)
  • PHIL 2506 Thinking Clearly (Fall term)
  • PHIL 2306 Pre-Socratics and Plato (Fall term)
  • PHIL 2307 Aristotle and the Schools (Winter term)
  • PHIL 3336 Reason and Experience (Fall term)
  • PHIL 3766 Special Topics in Philosophy (Winter term)

The annual salary will correspond with qualifications and experience and will follow the Nipissing University Faculty Association (NUFA) Collective Agreement. The appointment will be effective August 1, 2023. The appointment is subject to final budget approval.

Nipissing University is in the City of North Bay, Ontario (population 55,000), between Lake Nipissing and Trout Lake and surrounded by pristine Canadian Shield Forest. A comfortable three-hour drive from Toronto and three and a half hours from Ottawa, this growing city has a vibrant arts community, ample amenities, and countless opportunities for outdoor activities.
