Job description

Located on a beautiful campus in Denver, the University of Denver (DU) is the oldest independent university in the Rocky Mountain region, which describes itself as a private university dedicated to the public good. DU enrolls over 14,000 students in its undergraduate and graduate programs. The Department of Philosophy at DU offers a BA in Philosophy and an MA in Philosophy through a dual MA program. It also contributes to the Joint Doctoral Program in Religion that the University of Denver shares with the Iliff School of Theology. Position Summary

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Denver invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level, effective September 1, 2024. We wish to hire a colleague who will deepen the foundation of our commitment to the study of Ethics and Democracy, broadly construed. The ideal candidate demonstrates experience and versatility in inclusive pedagogy. As part of the search, we will also prioritize consideration of scholars whose work engages historically underrepresented communities and traditions, further contributing to our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) through teaching, research, and service in our college and beyond. The position teaches five courses per year over three, ten-week quarters (Autumn, Winter, and Spring).

Essential Functions

  • Teaching five courses over three academic quarters at all levels, from new undergraduate to graduate.
  • Scholarly potential and the pursuit of an active research agenda.
  • Hold regular office hours to meet with and advise students enrolled in courses and/or about program and degree requirements.
  • Contribute to University, College, and departmental service.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with a variety of teaching methods.
  • Outstanding teaching skills.
  • Initiative and ability to work both independently and in a collaborative, collegial environment.
  • Demonstrated experience interacting with diverse communities or evidence of a commitment to incorporate inclusive teaching methods and/or pedagogies to effectively engage broadly diverse student populations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive excellence, equity, and access in education.
  • Exceptional abilities in scholarly and/or creative activities are needed as required by the department/center/school/college and position.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in philosophy, or related field, received before date of appointment.
  • Strong commitment to successful scholarship and teaching.
  • A clearly defined research and publication agenda.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A record of strong teaching experience.
  • Experience with Canvas or a comparable software product.

Working Environment

1. Standard office environment.
2. Unexpected interruptions occur often, and stress level is moderate to high.
3. Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

1. Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time.
2. Ability to sit or stand in front of a classroom for an extended period of time.
3. Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

Work Schedule
While the University's administrative offices are open Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, faculty schedules vary from term to term and are based on courses taught, service commitments, and research agendas. The University's academic calendars are posted on the registrar's website (the law school is on a semester system and has a different academic calendar).

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is UC.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $70,000-80,000

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
