Assistant Professor of Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy at Lafayette College invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Philosophy starting in Fall 2024. We seek applicants specializing in social/political philosophy with demonstrated competence in the philosophy of race. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in philosophy or related field by August 2024, an active research program, and a strong interest in undergraduate teaching.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in social/political philosophy at the introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels (e.g., Basic Social Questions, Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Law), as well as courses in the philosophy of race and related topics (e.g., caste, class, oppression, etc.). There will also be opportunities to develop and teach courses that further reflect the candidate’s expertise (e.g., first-year seminars, senior capstone courses, special topics courses, and so on). First-year benefits include a 2/2 teaching load (2/3 thereafter), no faculty committee service, and no supervision of honors theses or independent studies. Continuing benefits include a pre-tenure faculty research leave after successful mid-term review, conference travel funding, regular post-tenure sabbatical leaves, and so on. More information about the Philosophy Department is available at https://philosophy.lafayette.edu.

Application materials should include a brief cover letter that discusses the specific interest in the position, CV, statement of teaching philosophy, a range of sample syllabi, one writing sample, and three confidential letters of recommendation. In the application materials, please address how your scholarship, teaching, mentoring and/or community service would support Lafayette’s commitment to diversity and inclusion as articulated in the college’s diversity statement (https://about.lafayette.edu/diversity-statement/). Applications must be received by December 1, 2023 for full consideration. Please upload application materials electronically through Interfolio at http://apply.interfolio.com/131521.
