Job description

We are searching for a philosopher who can make a significant contribution to our program, which is known for its strength in 19th and 20th century European philosophy among other areas of strength. Philosophical and historical competence with respect to 19th and/or 20th century philosophy are prerequisites.

The position includes graduate and undergraduate teaching, 4 courses per year on the quarter system, thesis supervision, and standard non-teaching duties. Candidates will show promise of, or have an established record of excellence in research and teaching and must be committed to teaching effectively at all levels, including graduate mentoring. The successful candidate will join an active, collegial and nationally ranked department, which is known for its strengths in 19th and 20th century European philosophy. Many faculty work in multiple areas and there is significant interaction between the different areas of strength in the department.

Advancement through the faculty ranks at the University of California is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations, occurring every 2-3 years, each of which includes substantial peer input. The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. The salary range for this position is $74,600 -$197,100. “Off-scale salaries” and other components of pay, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.
