General Overview:

The interdisciplinary Peace and Conflict Studies Program in the Department of Philosophy at California State University, Fresno invites applicants for an Assistant Professor position beginning Fall 2024. Our new colleague will teach undergraduate courses in the Peace and Conflict Studies curriculum, advise students, supervise student research, conduct and publish research, develop curriculum, and facilitate community outreach. We seek an individual who is enthusiastic about working cooperatively with faculty and staff in the Philosophy Department, the College of Arts and Humanities, and departments campuswide that are associated with the Peace and Conflict Studies program. The candidate is expected to assume leadership roles in the Peace and Conflict Studies Program and the endowed M. K. Gandhi Center when the opportunities become available.

Faculty typically teach 12 WTUs (4 courses) per semester. Faculty may apply for assigned time course reductions to support scholarly and/or creative activities. The current faculty contract provides for a course release each semester for the faculty member's first two years. Release time normally accompanies leadership positions. In summary, the successful candidate will teach and develop courses, conduct scholarly research; serve on department, college, and university committees; engage in community service; and actively participate in Peace and Conflict Studies and Philosophy Department activities and programming.

Position Description:

We invite applicants who approach teaching and research in Peace and Conflict studies from a perspective that is grounded in the Humanities. We seek candidates with expertise and/or competence in some of the following: peace education, peace-making and peace-building, mediation, and conflict resolution. Areas of scholarly and pedagogical interest may include: peace movements; philosophical themes such as uplift of all, nonviolent resistance, self-reliance; the lives and ideas of key figures (for example, Mohandas Gandhi, Leo Tolstoy, Jane Addams, Dorothy Day, Martin Luther King Jr., James Lawson, Cesar Chavez, Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, etc.). The successful candidate will teach topics and courses in Peace and Conflict Studies, including “Introduction to Peace and Conflict Studies,” “Peace Building,” “Mediation,” “Gandhi, Nonviolence, Sarvodaya, and Peace,” “Political Violence: War, Warfare, and Terrorism.” Opportunities exist for supervising internships and service-learning projects. Our new colleague will be expected to grow the program in collaboration with faculty in Philosophy, Religious Studies, Criminology, Social Work, and related areas. They are expected to lead or support activities of the M. K. Gandhi Center: Inner Peace and Sarvodaya and programming at Fresno State's Peace Garden, which is located in the heart of campus and features monuments of Gandhi, Jane Addams, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Cesar Chavez. See required qualifications below. Specific assignments are dependent on departmental needs and the background of the individual.

Qualifications:

Required Education (from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent.):

• An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Philosophy, Religious Studies, Peace Studies, or a closely related discipline from an accredited (or equivalent) institution.

• Applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered; however, for appointment, the doctorate must be completed by August 1, 2024

Required Experience:

• Evidence of excellence in teaching and course development in the theory, philosophy, and practice of nonviolence and peace (from a perspective that is grounded in the humanities), in a broad undergraduate curriculum, to both majors and non-majors.

• A record of humanistic scholarship in subjects related to Peace and Conflict Studies, commensurate with years of experience.

• Evidence of engagement with any aspect of Gandhi's philosophy and principles in teaching or research.

• Demonstrated commitment to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds, and to engage with diverse communities in the San Joaquin Valley region.

• A record of organizing scholarly and community events.

Preferred Experience:

• Evidence of sincere commitment to engagement with scholars, students, and community members across disciplines and organizations.

• Experience in and enthusiasm for teaching students of diverse ethnic backgrounds and/or first-generation college students.

• Experience, expertise, and interest in contemporary issues in peace and conflict studies.

• Ability to teach, organize events, mentor student activities, and create programming related to the figures represented in Fresno State's Peace Garden.

Fresno State's Peace and Conflict Studies Program is an interdisciplinary program housed in the Department of Philosophy, in the College of Arts and Humanities. It prepares students with theoretical approaches, along with peacemaking and conflict-management skills they can apply to professional and life situations. This interdisciplinary minor is open to students in any academic discipline or chosen profession. The program currently offers a minor and a certificate.
