Job description

Position Description

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning Fall 2024. Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee is on the academic semester system, and the default teaching load is four courses across two terms each year. Research and teaching expectations are high. The department’s faculty keeps a dynamic, expanding, and high level of research and publications nationally and internationally. Teaching expectations include introductory, middle-level, and advanced undergraduate courses, graduate teaching in the area/s of specialization and competence, mentoring of graduate student research at the M.A. and Ph.D. levels, directing undergraduate and M.A. theses, as well as chairing or being part of dissertation committees. Service (to the department, university, and profession, and appropriate to rank) is also taken as a substantial part of faculty duties and responsibilities. UTK is a land-grant university and values engaged forms of research/scholarship/creative activity, teaching and service, and considers evidence of these commitments in the records of applicants.

Qualifications

PhD in Philosophy must be completed by the position start date, 8/1/2024.

The Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee is seeking candidates who have the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the University.

Area of Specialization: Applied Philosophy broadly construed to include Philosophy of Medicine, Philosophy of AI and Data Science, Philosophy of the Environment, or STS (Science, Technology and Society).
