Position Summary:

The School of Politics, Philosophy and Public Affairs at Washington State University invites applications for a permanent, full-time, nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Pullman, WA, with research interests in philosophical issues associated with new and emerging technologies. Specifically, we seek applicants whose expertise can be applied to the ethical, just, and equitable use of new technologies, such as robotics, nanotechnologies, augmented realities, data security and privacy, Large Language Models (LLM) like Chat GPT and the large-scale deployment of artificial intelligence (AI).

It is anticipated that the successful candidate will begin the appointment on August 16, 2024.

Job duties: 

• Teaching two courses each semester within the philosophy degree program

• Conducting original research, which will be reflected in annual refereed publications and scholarly conference presentations.

• Serving on school, college, and university committees and participating in the shared governance of the School of Politics, Philosophy and Public Affairs.

The workload of this position is 40% teaching, 40% research and 20% service.

Required Qualifications: 

• Completed Ph.D. in philosophy or related discipline by time of appointment.

• Demonstrated record of or potential for research in philosophical issues related to the ethical, just, and socially equitable human-technology interactions and new technologies such as, but not limited to, robotics, nanotechnologies, augmented realities, data security and privacy, Large Language Models (LLM) like Chat GPT or the deployment of artificial intelligence (AI)

• Proven record of or potential for successful teaching and instruction.

• Demonstrated record of or potential for commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, and access efforts

Preferred Qualifications:

• An Area of Specialization (AOS) in research on philosophical issues associated with new and emerging technologies

• An Area of Competence (AOC) in one or more of the following fields: Philosophy of Technology; Philosophy of Science; Science, Technology, and Society (STS); Philosophy of Mind and Metaphysics; Epistemology; Philosophy of Race

Annual Salary: $74,000-79,000 per nine-month academic year

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.  WSU offers a comprehensive benefits package which includes paid sick and vacation leave; paid holidays; medical, dental, life and disability insurance package for employees and dependents; retirement; deferred compensation and optional supplemental retirement accounts.
