Job description

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Utah seeks to hire at least one tenure-line professor (open rank) to begin in Fall 2024. AOS: Applicant must have research expertise in some of the following areas: Philosophy and ethics of AI, Data ethics, Philosophy of technology, Philosophy and foundations of computing. AOC: Open, but applicant must be able to teach ethical issues in some of the above areas (e.g., data ethics, ethics of technology, ethics of AI) to philosophy majors and nonmajors (e.g., students majoring in computer science or other data-centric methodologies). We are seeking an outstanding scholar in the broad area of ethical, moral, aesthetic, or epistemological issues at the intersection of philosophy and digital technology (e.g., AI, algorithm ethics, interactive online media).

We welcome applications from early career scholars, including from graduate students expecting to defend by Summer 2024.

Tenure-line faculty in the Philosophy Department carry a 2/2 teaching load, which may include a mix of undergraduate and graduate courses, along with expectations of graduate advising and other contributions to the department’s research and service missions.

Located in metropolitan Salt Lake City in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains, the University of Utah is the state’s flagship research institution and emphasizes exceptional scholarship, quality teaching, and professional service.
