Job description

Job Description: The Department of Political Science and Philosophy at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor of Philosophy. The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching Ethics and Applied Ethics courses to support the Philosophy major/minor and the Bioethics minor. This position will also support the UMKC Essentials general education program, which has pressing needs in both Critical Thinking and Civic and Urban Engagement. Ability to teach Introductory Logic is preferred. This is a full-time, non-tenure-track, benefit-eligible position to begin August 2024.

The search committee will prioritize candidates with a demonstrated excellence in teaching and student mentorship. We are looking for a long-term colleague who can contribute to UMKC’s mission to engage and serve our diverse body of students and the community.

Minimum Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Philosophy or a closely related field is required at time of employment. ABD candidates with an expected degree completion date before August 1, 2024 also will be considered. Previous teaching experience in ethics, applied ethics, logic, and general education courses is preferred.

About Us: The Department of Political Science and Philosophy is part of the UMKC School of Social Sciences and Humanities. The department currently has 10 full-time faculty members, divided between Philosophy and Political Science. The Philosophy program offers a major and a minor, in addition to the Bioethics minor.
