Job description

The Department of Philosophy at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, invites applications for a two-year, non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor that will begin August 10, 2024. This appointment has a service component commensurate with rank. This appointment may be renewable contingent upon department needs, availability of funds, and performance review.

We seek an individual with at least teaching competence (i.e., an AOC) in value theory (broadly conceived, but political philosophy and applied ethics preferred), metaphysics, and informal logic (critical thinking). We are especially interested in individuals who have demonstrated an ability to teach introductory courses in these areas in a general education curriculum. The successful applicant will be expected to be an effective teacher, and the position will have a [3-3] teaching load.

A PhD degree at the time appointment begins (August 10, 2024) is required, as is teaching competence (AOC) in the areas listed above, and a specialization (AOS) in at least one of these areas.

Teaching experience and effectiveness in the listed areas is preferred. For the value theory AOC, experience and effectiveness in teaching political philosophy and applied ethics is preferred.

Applicants must apply online at https://jobs.wm.edu. Submit a curriculum vitae, a cover letter, a statement of teaching interests, evidence of teaching effectiveness (e.g., student course evaluations), and a writing sample. A diversity statement is not required. Candidates are encouraged to reflect on their past experiences or future plans to foster an inclusive and welcoming climate for learners or scholars in Philosophy in their cover letters or teaching statements. You will be prompted to submit online the names and email addresses of three references who will be contacted by the system with instructions for how to submit a letter of reference.

For full consideration, submit application materials by the initial review date, Jan. 20, 2024. Applications received after the initial review date will be considered if needed.

Information on the degree programs in the Department of Philosophy may be found at https://www.wm.edu/as/philosophy/.   William & Mary values diversity and invites applications from underrepresented groups who will enrich the research, teaching and service missions of the university. The university is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer and encourages applications from women, minorities, protected veterans, and individuals with disabilities.
