Job description

Fairfield University’s Patrick J. Waide Center for Applied Ethics is inviting applications for a Director to lead research and curricular efforts to raise the national profile of the Waide Center starting Fall 2024 pending final budget approval, in support of Fairfield University’s strategic priorities, by focusing on cutting-edge ethics issues.

Key responsibilities include:

This is a faculty position with administrative duties. In addition to teach four courses per academic year in ethics-related areas, the administrative duties include primarily the following:

External Relations and Outreach

  • Develop high visibility and impact events and programing to enhance the external profile of the Waide Center (e.g., annual high-profile public speaker events, blogs, op-ed pieces, articles)
  • Collaborate with University Marketing to promote the visibility and reputation of the Waide Center, including the Center’s web page
  • Establish an Advisory Board and work with it to advance the Waide Center’s goals
  • Coordinate with University Advancement and maintain relations with the Center’s benefactor, Patrick J. Waide.
  • Identify, cultivate and steward donors and supporters
  • Explore innovative ways to engage external stakeholders (e.g., distinguished visiting professionals, corporations)

Research and Academic Programming

  • Identify/create opportunities to support faculty research and programs to advance the Waide Center’s mission across campus
  • Communicate regularly with academic colleagues across the University about shared interests and opportunities.

Curriculum

  • Ensure that Applied Ethics course offerings for the entire campus are consistent with the Waide Center’s mission.
  • Ensure sufficient offerings to meet student demand and the requirements of particular academic programs, and to enable students to complete the Applied Ethics Minor, and the Business, Law & Ethics Minor.
  • Oversee scheduling and staffing of Applied Ethics courses.
  • Provide faculty development opportunities as needed (sometimes in cooperation with University Center for Academic Excellence).

Qualifications

  • A terminal degree in a field related to ethics with academic credentials that can be tenured at associate or full professor rank at Fairfield University
  • Proven ability in elevating the visibility and reputation of an academic center and/or program, ideally in an area pertaining to ethics
  • Demonstrated success in relating to both academic and business/professional leaders
  • A proven record of teaching, thought leadership and/or civic engagement on issues involving ethics
