Job description

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Ottawa invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Ancient and/or Asian philosophy, beginning July 1, 2024.

Title of the Position: Assistant Professor, but higher ranks may be considered under exceptional circumstances.

Duties: Responsibilities include: a) active research and knowledge mobilization program; b) teaching; c) recruitment and supervision of graduate students; d) service to the community.

• Maintaining and developing a research program in Ancient and/or Asian Philosophy, resulting in scholarly publication and research grants.

• Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Ancient and/or Asian Philosophy in both French and English.

• Recruiting and training graduate students.

• Working collaboratively in research and university service.

• Participating in administrative activities of the department and service to the broader university community.

Terms: Tenure-track position

Wage: Salary scale for an assistant professor rank starts at $94,588 (as of May 1, 2023).

Required Qualifications: The successful candidate will be a scholar in Ancient and/or Asian Philosophy, with all of the following:

1. A doctorate (Ph.D.) by July 1, 2024 in a relevant discipline;

2. A demonstrated track record of scholarly excellence in Ancient and/or Asian Philosophy;

3. Evidence to support the establishment of an innovative research program, including a record of refereed publications and scholarly conferences;

4. A demonstrated ability or concrete plan to attract external funding;

5. Evidence of teaching experience or training at the university level;

6. A commitment to teaching and graduate training in our Department’s programs;

7. A commitment to principles related to equity, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of the research and teaching.

N.B. Active competency in both official languages will be considered an asset at the time of hiring. The selected candidate must demonstrate active bilingualism before being granted tenure.
